ART
Lindsey and I finally had the chance to visit the Daum Museum in Sedalia, MO last weekend. My mom watched Audrey while we went “into town”. We’ve been trying to check it out for a while, but our timing has always been off, arriving when the museum is closed for the holidays or during installation of a new exhibit. It was incredible. The current exhibition is Taking Stock: Selections from the Permanent Collection and it offered a wonderful representation of the breadth of the collection. It contained some really heavy hitters in the art world and I don’t think any of the work was produced before 1960. Beautiful Helen Frankenthalers and work from Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Donald Sultan, James Rosenquist, Julian Schnabel, David Salle, and a Bleckner print that was knocked me out.
And there were some fantastic ceramic pieces, but I’m not as familiar with the artists in that media. When you consider Sedalia has a population of 20,000 and the museum is on a community college campus that is practically in a corn field—well, it is pretty amazing. The museum’s benefactor, Harold Daum, is a retired Sedalia radiologist and according to the gal at the museum “keeps a low profile—doesn’t like a lot of attention”. He deserves a huge thanks—I know that. What a terrific asset for that community. It is really inspiring.
FOOD
Audrey and I went to the Farmer's Market at the Bottleworks yesterday. It was PACKED at 4:30 with many of the booths having lines. The plain goat cheese was gone by the time I arrived--but I did get some lip smacking marinated feta cheese. For dinner we had grilled burgers (beef raised by my parents) on fresh foccacia with heirloom tomotoes, cucumer and feta cheese, and mixed spring greens with green onions and hot bacon dressing. It was the best meal I've had in forever. Being at my parent's over the weekend and then experiencing such good simple food, amps up my desire to move to the country and start some kind of small-scale agri-business. My mom has the gardening chops and I have the marketing and business skills. Oh, all the dreams I have.
PLASTIC
...and Audrey was a champ. yesterday. She let me scoot her all over the hot parking lot of the Bottleworks. As long as she has Sophie The Giraffe to chew on, she's happy. Spending $20 on a chew toy may seem extreme, but Sophie was on a "safe teething toys" list and since it was something that was going to be in her mouth so much--I wanted to be safe. I've been going through all the household goods, trying to eliminate as much plastic as possible after reading about how much leaches into our foods. Gross. Glass. Glass. Glass, alas.
